Owners of the Nintendo DS will get a little bit more of mans best friend when Nintendogs makes
it's
debut on this side of the Pacific.
Not one, not two, but three, count 'em, three new breeds will be included in the game. A game which will be shipped in
three different versions, on August 22nd.
Woof.

I hope they include a Weimaraner. If so, I'll definitely buy a DS and this game. And for those who don't understand why Nintendogs will be so popular, you must either not have a dog or not live in a dogs-not-allowed apartment.

I guess I have a problem understanding sim-type games...especially those that simulate taking care of something. Anyhow, I won't be buying a DS yet...and if this makes the DS sell in the States then good for Nintendo. Feels like this game was made for the kids out there whose parents won't let them have a dog yet. Eh, oh well.

DG has a great point - the "no pets allowed" clause is going to drive me to get Nintendogs too. I was personally hoping for a Samoyed or a Japanese Spitz (effectively the same dog in different sizes) puppy, but I suppose the Dachsund mix (which does have a Husky) will do in a pinch.
Of course, with over 100 breeds recognized by the AKC, and even more recognized by the FCI, it would be very difficult to get a game containing all of these breeds, acting convincingly, on a portable. Maybe Nintendo should sell additional breeds as add-ons found in GBA carts.

these are the Breeds:
"The package of Nintendogs featuring the Labrador retriever on the cover also will have breeds like miniature schnauzer, toy poodle, Pembroke Welsh corgi, miniature pinscher and shiba inu.
The package with the Chihuahua on the cover also will have breeds like a German shepherd dog, boxer, cavalier King Charles spaniel, Yorkshire terrier and Shetland sheepdog.
And the miniature dachshund edition also will have breeds like golden retriever, beagle, pug, Siberian husky and Shih."

I won't be satisfied until there is a CARDIGAN Welsh Corgi puppy. Everyone knows that the Pembroke Welsh corgi is the vastly inferior Corgi.

I belive the non-starting breeds are unlockable. I'd be sad if they weren't. As it is, I would be hard-pressed to choose between the Lab version and the Chihuahua version, since there are breeds present in both that I really like.
And, this guy (http://lostgarden.com/2005/06/nintendogs-case-of-non-game-that.html) points out that Nintendogs actually as a lot of similarities to RPGs and other games than one might think. Leading him to the conclusion that it's very similar to most games people are familiar with.

http://lostgarden.com/2005/06/nintendogs-case-of-non-game-that.html
A sort of 'review' that disects Nintendogs from a game design perspective and discusses why it is so successful and has received such praise from Famitsu, etc.
I sent it to Joystiq, but they didn't post it. Well worth reading though, especially if you mistakenly think that Nintendogs is nothing more than a virtual pet...actually it is discussed here as an RPG.

To #7: I'm certainly not comparing this game to owning a dog. If I were able to, i.e. my landlord allowed it, I would certainly own a dog. Buy I can't, so I have to settle for inferior options, like a Nintendogs or a car. (Yes, that's a joke.)
And even if you don't want to actually own a dog, I'm sure there can be some enjoyment derived from this game. I'm excited about it and will probably enjoy it very much, with or without your blessing.

And #8, I read the article you linked and I still don't get it. I have absolutely no desire to "rub [my] stylus on the dog." That just sounds awful. I was happier thinking it was a Tamagotchi-like thing.
Perhaps it's an interesting dmeo showing how the stylus can be used in "games", but there's no way Nintendo brings this to the US if they had any real third party support.

Huan... just use your finger tip. You don't need to be that stubborn to play games. DS won't be broken by doing so, it's child-proof. Try to eat it and throw it against the wall, it still runs games.

I think that any game that caused a handheld to outsell the ps2 and psp in JAPAN, land of the PS, is something to look into. Perhaps it isnt the same as having a dog, but this dog wont bit you, run away, cost money to feed, crap and piss on your floor and shred your house. It might be more or less cute then a real dog, and you cant REALLY play with it... but it is a good substitute. The fact that 40% of the purchasers were female, as apposed to the usual 20% is great as well, apparently it also sold to older people too busy to have a real dog. Nintendo prooved its "non-game game" thing, it appealed to people never apealed to before, and sold, itself and the ds, like hotcakes. The fact that you get multiple breed to train and trade (yes its pokemon esque) is good, although you dont get them all, you get a variety. Voice command is a great idea, and having a virtual dog do what you tell it is miles ahead of the tamogotchi, not to mention 3d graphics, wireless multiplayer and more.

I honestly believe this game is going to be huge over here. I personally can't wait for it. It seems like such a simple yet very innovative and fun game. You know, not to say that it's directed to kids only, but the buzz has reached my area, at least with the kids. A lot of people say that Nintendogs is like tamagotchi. Well, it's obvious these people haven't done their research or are working off ignorance. Nintendogs is similar to tamagotchi in that your taking care of a dog. It's the same thing like saying your shooting in first-person shooters. The comparison between the two is like saying the jump with Mario from 2D to 3D was nothing new, because it used the same character.

I love my real dog and was quite skeptical about this virtual thing. But damn if it wasn't fun and addicting. It's really one of those things I believe you have to play to know what it's totally about. I certainly agree that it sounds corny at first. But give it ten minutes in the store and you'll get a better idea. Doesn't mean you have to buy a DS, but it might help you understand why so many people think it's a riot. Well, off to toss the little frisbee to "Frisby."

Well, since I didn't, what's your point? You seem to be suffering from the logical fallacy that Nintendogs will fail as a title because it resembles a short-lived fad from the 90s; whether it does or not (and from all reports I've read, it doesn't, hence my Pokemon comments), it's an apples-to-oranges comparison. Nintendogs will appeal to a wide audience, from my daughter to my wife to my neighbor who doesn't play video games, but loves dogs. The 'kawaii' factor is huge for this title, and it's one of the first to truly take advantage of the DS unique capabilities. It could fail miserably, but based on all the buzz surrounding it, I highly doubt it.

That comment there actually had me laughing.
Do some people not know what E3 is, did they not see the DS games from the show and have they not even heard that the DS has hundreds of 3rd party developers behind it.
As for Nintendogs, I'm really stoked they regionalised it - makes up for the delay in my book.

Let me first make it clear that this game doesn't "anger" me. I just think that people who would want to play this game aren't the best and brightest this world has to offer. It's another example of something that will be a big success because people as a whole are generally irrational, immature, and lacking in a certain amount of mental capacity.
Think of some of the things that have been successful. Pokemon and Tamagotchi were both already mentioned. I mean, I think the purpose of life is to enjoy every moment, and if thats what some people enjoy, good for them, but things like this are doing no good for society as a whole. They are making our children dumber. I would accuse the Japanese of wanting that if these things were made just for the US, but they give them to their own children too. To me it's a shame that making money on fads has to come at the expense of the level of intelligence of our people.
Another thing is that I think this game is being defended by the fanboys of the country. This game will be as successful here in the US as the fanboys and children make it. If it was a PSP release, most of the N fanboys would be saying how stupid it was, and not one person here can dispute that. Videogaming has become like our goverment, except it's tri-partisan. So many people blindly support "their" company whether or not they are doing anything right.

I suppose the best and brightest would find a way to violate their leases. Or come up with a pill that magically cures all dog-related allergies. Or figures out how to teach someone to care for another living being without potentially putting one at risk.
Look, I have no illusions that this will equal having a real dog. It's a placeholder, meant to tide me over until the day comes that I am able to get a pet that doesn't violate any contracts I've signed.
But considering how much I miss being a pet owner... one DS card is a small price to pay for a facsimile thereof.

Wow, Your Mudder, that is one of the worst troll arguments made to date. Everything you said could be applied to any video game. Take the GTA series. While it has "mature" themes, it is one of the most immature games out there, in its approach. It doesn't take any intelligence to play. It does nothing good for society, and many politicians would argue that it is bad for society. I doubt politicians would slam on Nintendogs in a similar way. However, it is very popular.
All you and everyone else has to say is that it's not your style of game. Simple as that. No need to make judgement on anyone else who might choose to play it.It tends to speak more for how much of an idiot you are.
(I personally won't be getting it, as I don't have a DS, and don't see any games out for it yet that I want. I don't have a PSP either for that same reason.)

To me it's a shame that making money on fads has to come at the expense of the level of intelligence of our people."
Spoken truly like someone who doesn't have kids, hasn't played Pokemon and doesn't understand the basic precepts of cognitive learning.
Quick: Why is Pokemon so popular? Any idea? I'll tell you why: because it's target audience enjoys mastering the rather large and diverse lists of talents, rosters and interactions. Kids at the age level where Pokemon are targetted actually benefit a great deal from playing it. Can you tell me what the results of a Grass Pokemon using an Earth attack will be against a Fire Pokemon? There is a matrix chart for the interaction of the Pokemon, and tons of secrets and hidden information to suss out of the games. Such games actually teach valuable skills to younger players.
I don't hear you commenting, for example, on Harvest Moon, which is coming for the PSP and the DS (and is already on the DS). The PSP has lots of excellent games coming for it, some bearing more of a resemblance to Nintendogs than you seem to be aware. Katamari Damacy certainly never earned the ire of Nintendo fanboys...just sales from enthusiastic gamers.
And for the record, some of us own both the DS and the PSP, and are quite happy with both.

Thanks guys, and congratulations... you played my game and won... whats your prize? The honorable title of "Nintendo Fanboy". Get real. Pokemon does not make kids smarter. Some video games give kids skills, but they are rarely too "valuable" as you suggest. The reason these games make kids dumber is that they get too obsessed with them. That's exactly what Nintendo aims to do with such games... get kids hooked on the games so they all need to have it and keep playing til they dream about it and think about it all day in school. Then they buy Nintendogs shirts and other merchandise. There aren't doing children or society in general any favors.
Our children should be out playing sports and interacting with other living, breathing beings rather than being used as currency for Nintendo. I know, other video games play the same basic role, but kids don't get hooked to them the same way they do to games like Pokemon, and they aren't hooked to Pokemon because it's a wonderful game, they're hooked to it because it is designed to do exactly that... hook them in. It's not designed to teach them "valuable skills".
As far as adults go... I think if people were happy in their real lives they wouldn't feel the need to turn to virtual animals for companionship. I have no interest in the game because I would always rather be doing something other than playing with (or raising) a dog on my DS. Some video games are worth my free time, but not ones that simulate pets.
I can get a real dog if I want one, but I spend my days at work and I spend a lot of time with my beautiful girlfriend and that keeps me plenty happy.
Oh and Flaight... I keep her very happy too, so try that one on someone else.

Yes, they are fanboys. And in response to the PSP having similar games... okay, but I havent heard of them so I can't call them dumb, but I would if I had heard of them. I don't own either system, so I'll call a PSP game dumb just as easily. My comments are not driven by fanboyism, they are driven by my dislike for faddy pointless games that fanboys "cant wait for". I just have a hard time putting myself in your shoes. This game is just so completely uninteresting to me.
And the personal attacks aren't warranted here guys. Just stop thinking Nintendogs is a good game and we'll be buddies.

You talk of personal attacks when you label the entire planet that doesn't share your opinion as being "irrational, immature, and lacking in a certain amount of mental capacity." - get a grip on reality.
You then go on to call gamers that, as strange as it may be to you, like more than one console/handheld and in that bracket like Nintendo as being "fanboys" - give us a break and leave.
Fair doos it doesn't interest you, it's targetted toward adult non-gamers that due to living conditions can't have a dog. But all you have to say (if anything really) is that the game doesn't appeal to you. Projecting your ignorant false claims as you have done here is far from needed on joystiq.

Guys, come on... this is supposed to be in good fun. Have some spirited conversation and take it lightly or just ignore me when I state my opinion. It is my opinion, and I exaggerated it for effect and fun. I only did it because I knew it would work up fanboys such as yourselves. It makes me laugh when you get all worked up and call people trolls and tell them to leave. Honestly, if people like you didn't exist, I wouldn't have posted, but I knew I could get some debate out of it. It's a guarantee when you state an opinion that opposes Nintendo that you will be attacked. I think you are all rather delusional and fanatical and I like to laugh at you when you get in huffs and call people names.
What's funny is that this has become a classic example of the enemy that exists without whom you would have less purpose. I think you are all annoying, but if you didn't exist, I don't think I would enjoy this website half as much.
Anyway, lets just keep the banter light-hearted. It's gaming... it's not life and death.

Barry: "Huff Huff Huff! I take life too seriously!"
Hamster-Lite: I have a life... most likely a lot better and happier life than yours, and I get joy out of your angry comments. Continue please you raging fanboy. Yes, you are a fanboy, otherwise you wouldn't be defending Nintendogs. The title of fanboy fits so well, because there is such an easy litmus test for fanboys and you guys passed it with flying colors. This isn't about Nintendogs. It's about Nintendo, your undying love for the company, and your intolerance for those who think the company just doesn't make many quality products.
One more thing... I keep coming back and responding cuz I think it's fun. Why do you keep coming back? Because you think you are actually insulting me with your posts? You are truly more delusional than I thought. Spend your time doing something more useful. You may think you are more intelligent than me, but you are very wrong. "Get back to kindergarten son..." I mean... holy shit... that's just pathetic. You aren't very good at this man. I would say you need the help. You're on a gaming blog in a tizzy throwing weak insults around for no good reason. You are playing right into my hands... don't you realize that?

First off that wasn't me that made the last comment on #39, which is a little strange as it's well simualted, anyways.
Your response just sums up your relevance here, all you can do is name call without fact or logic ans use such practices in your gaming opinions. Even though I didn't actually type the kindergarden comment I think it's quite well put by whoever guised as me. It's actually a waste of my time replying, don't know why I bother - just read my last realy comment (#34) which sums you up nicely.
